Doetinchem is the largest town of the Achterhoek, the eastern corner of Gelderland near the German border. The Oude IJssel flows through it. The old town was heavily damaged in the final months of the Second World War, and much of what stands today was rebuilt afterwards, so the centre mixes older street lines with postwar reconstruction.
