Dongjiang is in the Longnan area of southern Gansu, where the land breaks into steep mountains that rise toward the Sichuan border. The town sits in the valley of the Bailong River. Here the ground is so rugged that almost every street runs parallel to the river, and the flat valley floor is precious.

The built-up area stretches along the valley and tightens where the mountains come close, with roads and bridges crowded into the available space.
