Dowleswaram lies on the eastern bank of the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh, just downstream from Rajahmundry. At this point the Godavari is very wide, scattered with sandbanks and islands, and the town's streets stretch along the riverbank. On the map, the water dominates, with the built-up area forming a narrow band beside it.
The town is known for the Dowleswaram barrage, first built as an anicut in the 1850s under the direction of Sir Arthur Cotton. It diverted the river into a network of irrigation canals that transformed agriculture in the Godavari delta. The later barrage, named after Cotton, crosses the river in a long straight line that is the most striking feature of the map.
