Dumaguete is the capital of Negros Oriental, on the southeastern coast of Negros island. The city runs along the shoreline, and on a map the coast is its defining edge: a gently curving line with the seafront road beside it and a compact grid of streets behind. Inland, the land rises toward the mountains of southern Negros, so the city has a clear sea side and hill side.
The seafront promenade, Rizal Boulevard, is one of the city's best-known places, a long walkway where people gather in the evenings. Close by is Silliman University, founded in 1901 and one of the oldest American-founded universities in Asia.
