El Monte lies in the San Gabriel Valley, east of downtown Los Angeles. On a map it sits between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River, whose straightened channels run roughly north to south on either side of the city. The land is flat, and the streets form a mostly regular grid of blocks.
Major roads cross the city in long straight lines, and the San Bernardino Freeway runs through the southern part of El Monte, with a large bus station serving the region. Residential blocks, shopping strips and small industrial areas fill the space between the main roads.
