Felipe Carrillo Puerto lies inland in central Quintana Roo, surrounded by low, flat forest on the Yucatán Peninsula. It was also the site of the sanctuary of the Speaking Cross. It was later renamed after Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a governor of Yucatán. A large share of the population still speaks Yucatec Maya.
