Fenggao lies in the west of Chongqing municipality, in the gently hilly country of the eastern Sichuan Basin, far from the river gorges of central Chongqing. The land here is a continuous run of low rises, small valleys and terraced fields. The town's streets have adapted to this ground instead of flattening it.
From above, newer districts appear as broad, regular blocks laid out where the land allowed. Older lanes bend more freely around the hills. Small reservoirs and ponds, typical of this farming region, show up as scattered irregular shapes. Roads out of town follow the valleys, so the network forks and curves rather than running straight.
