Finote Selam is a town in the West Gojjam area of Ethiopia's Amhara Region, on the high, rolling plateau south of Lake Tana. Its name translates roughly as path of peace. On the map it grows along the main road that crosses Gojjam toward Bahir Dar, with the densest blocks gathered near the centre and looser streets spreading out on either side.
Like many Ethiopian highland towns that have grown quickly in recent decades, it has two textures side by side.
