From above, the resort sits on terraces along the side of this bowl, with the ski runs dropping into it from the rim. The road reaches it from below, winding up through forest before entering the basin.
Flaine was built in the 1960s as a planned resort, with architecture by Marcel Breuer, who had trained at the Bauhaus. Its concrete buildings follow the terrain in stepped rows. The resort also displays outdoor works by artists including Picasso, Dubuffet and Vasarely, which makes it unusual among ski villages.
