Fougères stands on the eastern edge of Brittany, close to Normandy and Maine, a position that made it a border stronghold for centuries. Its layout is unusual. The upper town sits on a plateau, while the great castle stands below on a rocky spur in the valley, almost encircled by a bend of the Nançon. Old streets and the medieval quarter link the two.
The castle is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, with a long ring of walls and many towers. The town also keeps a belfry and parts of its ramparts, and it was an important centre of shoemaking in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Victor Hugo and Balzac both wrote about Fougères, and Balzac set part of Les Chouans here.
