Freiburg im Breisgau lies in the southwest corner of Germany, where the Dreisam valley opens out of the Black Forest onto the Upper Rhine plain. On the map, the historic centre forms a compact, roughly oval shape around the cathedral. Ring roads follow the line of the old walls, and the wooded Schlossberg rises directly to the east.
The old town is laced with Bächle, small open water channels running along the streets and fed from the Dreisam. Freiburg Minster, with its open-work Gothic spire, stands in the market square at the centre. The city is also known for sustainable planning, especially the Vauban district, built on a former military site with car-reduced streets and solar housing.
