Fröndenberg lies in the Unna district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the upper Ruhr, where the river winds through a green valley before reaching the industrial cities further west. The town grew around a Cistercian convent founded in the thirteenth century, later a collegiate foundation for noblewomen, and its church still stands above the valley. Fröndenberg also has a strong metalworking tradition, particularly chain-making, which is recorded in a local museum.
