Glauchau lies in western Saxony on the Zwickauer Mulde, between Zwickau and Chemnitz. The old town sits on higher ground above the river, and the map shows it as a compact knot of streets around a market square. Below, the Mulde bends through its valley, with roads, a railway line and later districts spread along it.
The town is best known for its two neighbouring palaces, Forderglauchau and Hinterglauchau. The Schönburg family built them side by side on the rise above the river, so Glauchau is often described as a double palace town.
