Goundam lies in the Timbuktu region of Mali, where the northern edge of the Niger inland delta meets the Sahara. From above, the town is a compact grid of sandy streets and walled compounds. Beyond it lies land shaped by water that comes and goes with the seasons: channels, lake basins and pale open ground.
The area is known for the lake system around Lake Faguibine, which once filled regularly with floodwater from the Niger.
