Grantham is a market town in the south of Lincolnshire, set in the valley of the River Witham. The river runs north through the town, and the old centre lies close to its eastern bank. From above, the East Coast Main Line cuts a clear line through the town, while the A1 passes along its western edge.
The spire of St Wulfram's Church, one of the tallest parish church spires in England, rises over the centre. Isaac Newton went to school here at the King's School, and Grantham is also the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher. The town grew as a stop on the Great North Road and later as a railway and engineering town.
