Great Bend is named for its setting: the point where the Arkansas River, flowing east across Kansas, swings in a broad arc to the southeast. The town lies on the north side of that curve. The Santa Fe Trail once followed this stretch of the river, and the town grew up as a railroad and cattle town in the 1870s.
