Guangtong is a town in Lufeng County, in the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture of central Yunnan. It lies on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, west of Kunming, in a landscape of red-earth hills, valleys and farmland. The town is best known as a railway junction: the Guangtong–Dali line to western Yunnan branches off the Chengdu–Kunming Railway here.
From above, the town is a compact group of streets gathered in a valley, with the rail lines sweeping past in long curves. Roads follow the lower ground and then climb into the surrounding hills, where fields and terraces cover the slopes. The mix of rigid railway geometry and soft terrain gives the map an unusual balance.
