Gummidipundi lies in Tiruvallur district at the northern edge of Tamil Nadu, close to the border with Andhra Pradesh. It is the terminus of one of Chennai's suburban railway lines, and the national highway toward Kolkata passes nearby, so the town's shape follows these two long corridors.
