Gyöngyös sits where the Great Hungarian Plain meets the southern slopes of the Mátra, Hungary's highest mountain range. From above, the old town centres on a long main square. Streets run outward from it, becoming a looser pattern of residential blocks. To the north, the town gives way quickly to vineyards and then forested hillsides.
The town is the heart of the Mátra wine region, and vineyards cover the lower slopes around it in fine parallel rows.
