The river dominates the map: a broad, curving channel with low islands and narrow bands of cultivated land on both banks, where palm groves and fields follow the water. The town spreads along the river, with residential streets on higher ground and the open desert plateau beyond.
Upstream lies the Haditha Dam, one of the largest in Iraq. It holds back the Euphrates to form the large reservoir known as Lake Qadisiyah.
