Harasta lies on the north-eastern edge of Damascus, in the agricultural belt known as the Ghouta. The main highway leaving Damascus towards Homs runs alongside the town, and on a map it is a strong, straight line bordering the built-up area. The older core has narrow, irregular streets, while newer districts have a more regular block pattern.
For centuries the Ghouta was a zone of orchards and gardens watered by channels from the Barada river, supplying the capital with fruit and produce.
