Heerenveen grew in the seventeenth century as a peat-digging settlement, and its name, roughly the lords' fen, still describes the landscape that shaped it. On the map that origin shows in long, straight waterways and streets laid out along them, a linear logic very different from the circular cores of older Dutch towns. The old canal known as the Heeresloot runs through the centre as the town's founding axis.
Around this core the town spreads in orderly residential districts, parks and sports grounds, all set against the flat Frisian countryside.
