Ilhabela is an island municipality off the northern coast of São Paulo state, centred on São Sebastião Island. Most of the island is steep, forested and protected as a state park, so the settlements are confined to a narrow coastal strip, mainly on the western side facing the mainland across the São Sebastião channel.
From above, the contrast is striking. A single coastal road follows the shoreline in a long curve, with the small grid of the historic village and a chain of beaches along it, while the interior shows almost no streets at all. Ferries cross the channel to São Sebastião on the mainland.

One main road follows the western shore, linking beaches, the old village and the ferry landing, and on the map it reads as a single thread tracing the island's edge.
