Istres lies on the north-western shore of the Étang de Berre, the large saltwater lagoon north-west of Marseille. The old town sits on a rise above the water, and just north of it lies the smaller, almost circular Étang de l'Olivier. Beyond the centre, residential districts spread across the gentle slopes, and to the north-west the land opens onto the stony plain of the Crau.
