Janzūr lies on the Libyan coast just west of Tripoli, and the two now almost run together along the sea. From above the town forms a long strip. The Mediterranean draws a smooth, uninterrupted edge to the north, the coastal highway runs parallel to it, and neighbourhoods and walled gardens fill the ground between the road and the shore.
The area has been settled since antiquity. Excavations here have uncovered a Roman-era necropolis with painted tombs, and the finds are shown in a local museum. Today the town is largely residential, with a seafront used by families from across the Tripoli area in summer.
