Ji’an lies in central Jiangxi on the Gan River, the province's main river, which flows north through the city toward Poyang Lake. The river dominates the map, wide and gently curving, with the older centre on one bank and newer districts developing across the water. Bridges link the two sides at intervals.
Away from the river the terrain mixes low hills and valleys. The street pattern is fairly regular near the centre and less so toward the edges.
