Kasur sits in Pakistan's Punjab, south-east of Lahore and only a few kilometres from the border with India. From above it reads as a tight, irregular core of lanes and courtyards that has grown outward in newer, more regular blocks, with the railway and the road to Lahore leading away to the north-west across a level plain.
The city is best known as the resting place of Bulleh Shah, the eighteenth-century Sufi poet whose verses are still sung across Punjab, and his shrine draws visitors throughout the year.
