Kennedy Town sits at the far western end of Hong Kong Island's northern shore. On the map it is a thin strip of dense streets running along the water, pressed against steep slopes that climb toward Mount Davis. Buildings stand close together on reclaimed flat land, and the contour lines above the town gather quickly as the hillside rises.
The waterfront defines the district. A promenade follows the edge of the harbour where it opens west toward the outlying waters, and the piers and seawalls give the coastline a series of straight, deliberate angles. Inland, a handful of parallel streets run along the shore, joined by short cross streets and stairways that climb the slope.
The area is named after Sir Arthur Kennedy, a nineteenth-century governor of Hong Kong. It is also a terminus twice over: the tram line along the island's north shore ends here, and since 2014 the MTR Island line has too.
