Kertih lies on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, in the state of Terengganu, facing the South China Sea. The coast is long and nearly straight, a line of sand against open water. On a map, the town spreads along this shore, with its residential streets in the flat land behind the beach and a coastal highway running parallel to the sea.
The town is best known as a centre of Malaysia's oil and gas industry. Petrochemical plants and industrial facilities, linked to Petronas and offshore fields in the South China Sea, cover large areas near the coast.
