Kirzhach lies in the west of Vladimir Oblast, close to the border of Moscow Oblast, on a river of the same name. On a map the river winds through the town in loops, and the streets spread along its banks. Low wooden houses in the older districts contrast with a few blocks of Soviet-era apartments.
The town grew around the Annunciation Monastery, founded in the fourteenth century by Sergius of Radonezh, one of the most revered figures of the Russian Church.
