Kızıltepe lies south of Mardin in southeastern Turkey, where the hills of the Mardin plateau give way to the wide, level plain of upper Mesopotamia. From above the town spreads easily across flat ground, with long straight avenues and blocks that have extended in several directions over recent decades, surrounded by large irrigated fields.
The town's name means red hill in Turkish. Its best-known monument is the Great Mosque, built in the thirteenth century under the Artuqid dynasty and noted for its carved stone portal and mihrab. The border with Syria lies a short distance to the south, and the plain around the town is farmed for grain and cotton.
