Kuanchuan lies in southeastern Gansu, in a region of hills, deep valleys and farmland. From above, the settlement follows the shape of the land closely. The built-up area stays mostly on the flatter valley floor, while roads and paths curve along contours to reach villages higher on the slopes.
As in much of this part of China, the land around the town has been heavily worked for farming, and terraced fields cover many hillsides. On a map this produces a fine texture of curving lines outside the town, in contrast with the straighter and denser streets of the centre itself.
