Kuznetsk is a town in Penza Oblast, set on the small Truyev River in rolling country west of the Volga. The name comes from the blacksmiths who worked here in the town's early years. On a map the river winds through the town from one side to the other, with ponds and low ground along its banks. Most districts sit on the gentler slopes above.
The older centre follows a fairly regular pattern of streets, laid out in the manner of many provincial Russian towns. Further out are later residential blocks with longer buildings and wider spacing. Industrial areas and railway tracks add a few strong straight lines.
