Leland lies in Brunswick County in south-eastern North Carolina, west of the Brunswick and Cape Fear rivers and across from downtown Wilmington. From above, it looks less like a single town centre than a collection of neighbourhoods among pine forest, wetlands and creeks. Highways and long connecting roads join them and lead toward the bridges into the city.
In recent decades Leland has been one of the fastest-growing towns in the state, as new residential developments filled former timberland.
