Les Lilas is one of the smallest communes in Île-de-France by area, tucked against the eastern edge of Paris in Seine-Saint-Denis. From above, its streets continue the Parisian fabric almost without interruption. The boulevard périphérique and the green strip beside it mark the city limit, and the land rises toward the Romainville plateau.
The name recalls the lilac fields that once covered these slopes when the area was a rural outskirt of Paris. Today it is fully urban, a place of apartment blocks, small houses and narrow streets. Métro line 11 connects it to central Paris, and its recent extension has brought new stations to the neighbourhood.
