Les Orres lies on the slopes south of Embrun in the Hautes-Alpes, looking out over the Lac de Serre-Ponçon. The commune has an old village and several hamlets on the lower hillside, and a purpose-built ski station higher up, created in 1970. On a map, winding roads link these levels in steps across the forested slope.
The lake below is one of the largest reservoirs in Western Europe, formed by a dam on the Durance. It gives the resort a view that few places in the Alps share. The station has two levels, Les Orres 1650 and 1800, with slopes rising through larch forest toward open ground.
