Lichtenfels lies in the wide valley of the Main in Upper Franconia, and from above the river is the first thing you notice. It winds across a flat floodplain beside the town, accompanied by lakes left behind by gravel extraction, while the settlement gathers on slightly higher ground. The old core is small and dense, a knot of short streets within the line of its former walls.
The town is known across Germany as a centre of basket weaving, with a state school devoted to the craft and a basket market that fills the streets each September.
