Lishi is a town in Jiangjin District in the south-west of Chongqing municipality, south of the Yangtze in the hilly terrain typical of the region. From above, nothing here stays flat for long. The town fills the lower ground between ridges, with streets bending around the slopes and newer buildings stepping up the hillsides wherever the land allows.
Around the built-up area, the countryside is a patchwork of small terraced fields, ponds and wooded hills, and roads twist through it along the contours. This gives the map an organic, flowing texture, very different from the straight grids of towns on the northern plains. Streams collect in the valleys and appear as thin, winding lines between the slopes.
