Llanelli sits on the north shore of the Loughor estuary, where it opens into Carmarthen Bay and faces the Gower peninsula across the water. On the map the coastline is the main feature: a long southern edge of tidal sands and mudflats, with old dock basins cut into the shore close to the town.
The town grew rapidly in the nineteenth century on coal, copper and above all tinplate, which earned it the nickname Tinopolis. Its terraced streets fill the ground behind the shore in tight rows. Today the Millennium Coastal Park follows the former industrial waterfront, a continuous green strip along the estuary.
