Lohmar lies in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Cologne and Bonn and the hills of the Bergisches Land. It is less a single town than a group of settlements joined together, and on a map it appears as several centres linked by roads through fields and woods, with the Agger river curving through the valley.
To the west lies the Wahner Heide, a large heath and nature reserve next to Cologne Bonn Airport, one of the most important heathland areas in the region.
