Lusambo is shaped by the Sankuru River. The town lies along the water, and the river's broad curve dominates any map of the area. Streets run back from the bank in a modest pattern, and beyond the built-up area the roads quickly become long tracks crossing a landscape of forest and savanna. The town is the capital of Sankuru province in central DR Congo.
