Lustenau is a market town in Vorarlberg, in the flat Rhine valley just south of Lake Constance. On a map it is defined by the Rhine. The old course of the river curves along the town's western side and forms the border with Switzerland, while a straightened channel built in the early twentieth century cuts across the valley nearby, a long engineered line.
Within those water boundaries the town spreads over flat land in a loose, sprawling pattern. Streets and houses follow old field divisions and roads, and the town lacks a single compact centre. Lustenau is often described as Austria's largest market town, a status reflected in its extended size.
From the nineteenth century the town was a centre of embroidery, and many houses once held stitching machines.
