Manbij lies in northern Syria, on the broad, gently rolling plain between Aleppo and the Euphrates, which flows some distance to the east. The land around the town is open and mostly farmland. The site is very old. In classical times the town was known as Hierapolis Bambyce, a centre of the cult of the Syrian goddess Atargatis, and it appears in writings from the Roman period.
