Few Italian cities have an outline as clear as Mantua's. The Mincio river widens here into three lakes, the Lago Superiore, Lago di Mezzo and Lago Inferiore, which curve around the historic centre on the north, east and west. The lakes were shaped by medieval engineering, and on a map they give the city an island-like form, linked to the mainland by causeways and bridges.
Inside that ring of water, the streets of the old centre are dense and irregular, opening into a chain of squares near the vast Palazzo Ducale, seat of the Gonzaga family for almost four centuries.
