That southern edge is the island's most distinctive feature: a chain of great ponds pushing inland, their mouths closed by narrow barrier beaches. Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown form the busiest part of the island, and Oak Bluffs is known for its small, ornate cottages clustered around a former Methodist camp meeting ground. At the western tip rise the clay cliffs of Aquinnah.
