Seen from above, Matinhos is mostly a single long edge. Streets run parallel to the Atlantic in narrow bands, and short cross streets drop down to the sand at regular intervals. Behind them the built-up area thins quickly, giving way to forested slopes that climb toward the Serra do Mar. Matinhos sits on the short coastline of Paraná, one of the smallest stretches of seafront of any Brazilian state.
