Mentor stretches along the southern shore of Lake Erie in northeast Ohio. From above, the lake is a large blank edge along the top of the map, and the city fills the land behind it with curving subdivision streets, cul-de-sacs and a few long arterial roads running roughly east to west.
The coast is the most interesting part. At the Headlands, a sandy beach and state park face the open lake, and Mentor Marsh spreads inland behind it as a large wetland. Farther south, Interstate 90 and Route 2 cross the city in parallel lines.
Mentor is also where James A. Garfield ran his 1880 presidential campaign from his front porch. His home, known as Lawnfield, is now a national historic site. A Mentor map poster puts the lake, the marsh and the neighbourhoods together in one clean composition.
