Mkoani is the main port town of southern Pemba, the northern of the two large islands of the Zanzibar archipelago. It sits on the island's west coast above a bay where ferries arrive from Unguja, which makes it the entry point for many travellers to Pemba. On the map the town is a small cluster of streets on rising ground behind the harbour.
The coastline here is indented and green, with small inlets, mangroves and coral reefs offshore.
