Modugno sits a few kilometres west of Bari on the level limestone plain that stretches inland from the Adriatic. From above, a compact historic centre of narrow, irregular lanes is surrounded by a wider grid of later apartment blocks. Beyond those lie the neat outlines of fields and olive groves.
