Mongaguá stretches along the southern coast of São Paulo state, and from above it is almost entirely horizontal. The town forms a thin band parallel to the sea, pressed between a long, open beach and the forested lowlands and mountains of the Serra do Mar behind it. A coastal highway runs through the town parallel to the beach, acting as a spine that ties the neighbourhoods together.
